Plinth and Ray Architects, is an emerging practice based in Kerala. We work with a select quantity of projects in order to create spaces that are highly context specific and unique. With each project, we attempt to reach new boundaries of design and quality. The firm believes that the challenge of architecture lies in the balancing of these new imaginations with the physical and economical constraints of the material world. This realm between what is truly new and the what is physically possible is where the firm places itself in the context of each project.
Plinth & Ray ?
The idea of Plinth and Ray is two fold. The first is the proposition of designing with the direction of the sun as a major player in the context of any site. We believe that the way the sun enters the building plays a major role in describing the space. The way the sun hits the exterior of the building also plays a major role in the process of shaping the built mass. In this way the projects are almost constructed - extruded and subtracted - using the sun. Though this process is a major part in the design of each project, the ray of light does not play the major role in the project. It does not stand out, rather it is just the accent to the primary idea or concept of each work.
The second dimension of the name plinth and ray is based on the idea of contrasting elements. Just as a form needs light and shadow to reveal its depth, two contrasting opposites often work together to create something different. One of these elements is often a strong physical presence while the other can be ephemeral or imaginary. This idea often reflects on the projects where an element of contrast is introduced to complete the whole.
